Preston boss Billy Davies has emerged as one of the early favourites to fill the managerial post at Portman Road.

It is widely believed that Town chairman David Sheepshanks is likely to appoint a younger, up and coming manager after Joe Royles shock exit.

Sheepshanks credited Royle with his achievements over the past four years.

‘I have the utmost regard for him, he came in and managed club through pretty a turbulent time in the early days and leaves the club in a lot better position than he found it.

‘We’ve got a new found stability with a lot of bright young players – there are a lot of things to look forward to going forward.’

On appointing a new manager, Sheepshanks stated;

‘The process is new, I haven’t been in contact with any clubs or managers or anything. We will seek applicants for the position. Everyone’s away on holiday so we can take a little bit of time to try and get the right appointment – we will seek all applicants.’

Colchester’s Phil Parkinson was also among early contenders, although it is Davies who is highly rated amongst the Town board.

The 41 year old has enjoyed a successful season at Deepdale, who eventually lost out to Leeds in the play-off semi final.

Town are keen to ensure that the vacancy is filled in time for pre season training on 26th June.
