Danny Haynes has been sold to Bristol City for a reported £400,000 and thanked the coaches, fans, players and tea-ladies at Ipswich for his six years at the club.

Although Haynes was tipped to leave Town over the summer, it came as a bolt out of the blue when reports emerged yesterday morning that he was at Ashton Gate for a medical. Plymouth were linked with the 21-year-old winger or striker, but Pilgrims boss Paul Sturrock ruled a switch out. Swansea were also said to be interested.

Those reports linking him with a transfer to Plymouth claimed that Danny was valued at £1 million, although the transfer fee is only thought the be £400,000. In today’s transfer market, you would have thought Ipswich could have got a little more for a player with such promise. However the price paid by Brizzle is officially undisclosed (as always).

He has joined the Robins on a three year deal in a move that makes good footballing sense. At this stage of his career, Haynes needs to be playing regular football and the chances of that are far higher at Ashton Gate, even though Ipswich are fourth favourites for promotion with Roy Keane at the helm.

Gary Johnson is no mug though, I am sure that he will get the best out of Haynes and help him fulfill his potential. He was capped a number of times for England U19’s but had probably gone a bit stale in the past season or two, so the time is probably right for Haynes to move on and who knows, maybe earn a move to the Premiership.

The article continues below, but I would like to give you a little reminder of what Haynes has done for Ipswich. This is perhaps my favourite of his goals:

Danny certainly feels that way, and he is looking forward to a fresh start at Brizzle. He told the club site: ‘I have been at Ipswich for a long time so it’s been a difficult decision to leave the club but it’s the right time in my career to move on.

‘I want to thank the coaching staff and everyone at Ipswich for the help they have given me in my time there, especially the supporters who have been fantastic to me.

‘Roy Keane has brought in some new players and has his own ideas on how he wants to take Ipswich forward and I respect that. It’s important for me though to play regular first team football and I’m now looking forward to a new career at Bristol.’

It’s a shame to see that Haynes hasn’t progressed as much as us Town fans would have liked, and I am disappointed that he isn’t moving to the Premiership. No disrespect but a move to City seems a bit of a step backwards, but maybe it is what his career needs to get it going again. Good luck Danny.
