Ipswich Town are thought to be on the verge of completing a deal for Tranmere Rovers defender Aaron Cresswell, according to reports.

Town have been linked with Cresswell on a number of occasions this summer, with speculation mounting last week after it was revealed that Tranmere had rejected a bid for the 21-year-old from an unnamed Championship club. Reports today however suggest that the Blues are set to win the race for the left-back, beating the likes of West Bromwich Albion and Doncaster Rovers.

Ipswich manager Paul Jewell has been searching for defensive reinforcements this summer following the loss of several players including Gareth McAuley, Tom Eastman, Troy Brown and Celtic loanee Darren O’Dea. Town are also in need of cover in the full-back positions, with 35-year-old Mark Kennedy and out-of-favour youngster Shane O’Connor the only regular left-backs currently at the club.

The Blues could however be set to miss out on another of their defensive targets, Sean St Ledger. Jewell recently made an enquiry for the Preston North End defender, but St Ledger could now be set for Leicester City after the Foxes reportedly agreed a fee for the 26-year-old.
