Teenage striker Connor Wickham has committed his immediate future to Ipswich Town Football Club by signing a new deal to stay at Portman Road until 2013.

England U21 international Wickham has been the subject of constant rumours about his future, with Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur all heavily linked with a move for the striker. Speculation had been growing before the end of 2010 that the 17-year-old could leave Town in the January transfer window – particularly if the Blues required funds for new signings – but the youngster has now ended the rumours for the foreseeable future by pledging himself to the Blues.

Speaking about his new deal, Wickham explained that he wished to remain at Portman Road to continue his football education. ‘I’ve been here since I was 12 years old and feel I’m at the right club to progress as a player’, he told the Ipswich Town Official Website; ‘I’m enjoying my football at Ipswich Town and am looking forward to the future here and playing my part in helping the Club reach the Premier League.’

Sealing this deal is a welcome boost to Town, who no doubt are keen to get the most out of the teenager’s undeniable potential. Despite still having yet to score this season following a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Wickham continues to excel at international level and has recently regained a place in the Ipswich starting XI, putting on a particularly impressive 90 minutes in Town’s Carling Cup win over Arsenal.

There are still many Town players however who are yet to secure their futures with the club. In particular, David Norris – the subject of reported interest from Portsmouth – as well as Gareth McAuley and Carlos Edwards are known to have held talks but as yet none have signed new deals. Ipswich Town manager Paul Jewell has expressed his desire to sort out the situation as soon as possible.

Meanwhile one deal Town look less likely to seal is the proposed signing of Pascal Chimbonda. The defender had his contract with Blackburn Rovers terminated yesterday, but despite rumours linking him with a move to Ipswich earlier this week, he is reported to be currently holding talks with QPR.
