Luca Civelli will be welcomed back to pre-season training in June along with everyone else, over a year after suffering a career-threatening knee injury.

And gaffer Roy Keane doesn’t plan to treat him any different to any of the other Ipswich players. Civelli, who is only 23, was allowed to return home to Argentina towards the end of the season but before that had been in light training.

Roy explained the itinerary for Luca: ‘The plan is that he will join in with us in pre-season on June 28th. He`ll join in with the rest of the group and there won`t be any cotton wool wrapped around the boy.

I`ve spoken to Antonio Gomez [Town’s fitness guru] and the medical staff have been in touch with people who are looking after him in Argentina and he`s coming on leaps and bounds.’

But Roy accepts that Civelli has more work to do than the other players to be ready for football again: ‘Making progress in the gym and out running is all well and good but on top of that football is about holding people off, twisting and turning and we won`t know about that until pre-season.

‘The boy`s not played football for 18 months, so don`t think I`m just going to be depending on Luca stepping straight back into the first team.’

I’m sure that all Town fans will love to see some natural width on the left and welcome back Luca to the side after such a serious injury, he certainly looked promising in his two months with us before he suffered the damage.
