With the successor to Jason De Vos position as captain yet to be announced, we take a look at the main contenders for the role.

David Wright: The right-back was the unsung hero of last season as his defence-splitting runs often went unnoticed. He was the face that Ipswich used to launch the new home kit and could be a sign of things to come. Captain Wright? Don’t bet against it.

Gareth McAuley: Manager Jim Magilton has already insisted that he has no qualms in appointing a new signing captain if he feels they will do the best job. The £1.1 million man captained Leicester for a time last season.

Jon Walters: Player of the season undoubtedly, but how will he cope with the responsibility of captaining the team? Other sports have shown that appointing your best player as captain doesn’t always go to plan.

David Norris: The midfielder, signed from Plymouth from £2 million, did not enjoy the best of starts to his Ipswich career with a heel injury that ruled him out of last season’s run-in. However, he will be much like a new signing next year and has captained Plymouth in the past. A very likely choice for skipper.

Owen Garvan: Could Jim Magilton hand Garv the armband to force him to sign a new contract? The young Irishman has such a big influence over the team, it would not be surprising even at such a young age for him to be captain of the Blues.

  • Garvan would be a good contender in my opinion, just to make him sign that new contract. However, I am a huge fan of David Wright, and he is one of my favourite players Town have had since the turn of the century. He would be a good candidate. I don’t think McAuley or Norris should be given the role, neither has been he long enought to warrant it. Walters – I think it would have a similar effect to England appointing Kevin Pietersen today in the Cricket!

  • Give it to Norris, great dominant midfielder that will shine for you once fit. Garvan a bit to shy for captain material but bloody good player.

  • I would give it to Mc Auley as he has already captained before . I’m sure Jim will know who he wants to take the arm band.

  • my choice would be McAuley or Norris with slight preference for norris dominant midfielder who would relish challenge

  • Norris has been captain before quietman as well.

I think Garvan should at least be considered as a vice captain possibly? and as far as i am aware the only captain experiance his had is a few times in the youth team.
A captain needs to have experiance because he can then pass on experiance to the younger ones.
Also they have to be able to cope with the weight of the criticism that falls on the whole team not just on themselves.

  • Garvan and Wright are good choices but for me it’ll have to be Norris, Garvs and Wrighty are vocal enough, a captin should always be talking to his team mates and spurring them on!! Norris was comfortable shouting at the other town players on his home debut so he should have no probs doing that again!!

  • The captain will probably be Irish as we know Jim favours players from the Emerald Isle or at least connected to …that hims a choice from…
Supple, Bruce, Garvan, Lee, Casement, Clarke, Quinn or McAuley which realistically reduces to Garvan, Quinn or McAuley with Garvan maybe a little on the young side at 20…..I’d say that leaves a straight choice between McAuley and Quinn………..who would bet against that?
