Captain Fantastic

With the successor to Jason De Vos position as captain yet to be announced, we take a look at the main contenders for the role.

David Wright: The right-back was the unsung hero of last season as his defence-splitting runs often went unnoticed. He was the face that Ipswich used to launch the new home kit and could be a sign of things to come. Captain Wright? Don’t bet against it.

Gareth McAuley: Manager Jim Magilton has already insisted that he has no qualms in appointing a new signing captain if he feels they will do the best job. The £1.1 million man captained Leicester for a time last season.

Jon Walters: Player of the season undoubtedly, but how will he cope with the responsibility of captaining the team? Other sports have shown that appointing your best player as captain doesn’t always go to plan.

David Norris: The midfielder, signed from Plymouth from £2 million, did not enjoy the best of starts to his Ipswich career with a heel injury that ruled him out of last season’s run-in. However, he will be much like a new signing next year and has captained Plymouth in the past. A very likely choice for skipper.

Owen Garvan: Could Jim Magilton hand Garv the armband to force him to sign a new contract? The young Irishman has such a big influence over the team, it would not be surprising even at such a young age for him to be captain of the Blues.
