Ipswich will seek permission to speak to Northampton boss Aidy Boothroyd as they quickly work through their list of candidates to replace Paul Jewell.

After twice taking teams in the relegation zone to safety, and in Watford’s case then winning prmotion to the Premier League, Boothroyd fits the profile owner Marcus Evans has compiled.

The former Coventry and Colchester United boss, who has also reached an FA Cup semi-final as a manager has lifted League Two Cobblers from within days of dropping out of the league to respectability despite a limited budget and resources, although his pragmatic style of football is not universally popular.

Town are in the process of compiling a shortlist, which includes a couple of up and coming coaches seeking a managerial step up, a couple of managers already with club, including Boothroyd and MK Dons’ Carl Robinson, and a couple of out of work bosses in the Owen Coyle mould.
