Reports claim that Ipswich Town could be ready to move for Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Richard Stearman.

A former England U21 international, Stearman began his professional career alongside Gareth McAuley at Leicester City, where he made 116 league appearances and won the Player of the Year Award in the Foxes’ relegation season of 2007/08. The 23-year-old, who can play at either centre-back or right-back, subsequently moved to Wolves where he has since made 47 Premier League appearances following their promotion in 2008/09.

However, the return to fitness of veteran Jody Craddock and the arrival of ex-Birmingham City defender Roger Johnson looks set to push Stearman down the defensive pecking order at Molineux. Reports now claim that Ipswich have made an enquiry for the 6ft 3in defender, who is said to be rated at around £1 million.

Certainly the rearguard is the main concern of Town fans according to last week’s site poll, and defensive reinforcements are undoubtedly the priority for Paul Jewell at this stage, with the Blues boss confirming that he has recently been on the lookout for new additions to his backline. Cover will be needed at centre-back – where Ivar Ingimarsson, Damien Delaney and Tommy Smith are the only senior players – whilst further options at right-back would be useful, with the likes of Carlos Edwards and Jaime Peters having been used to fill this position over the past year.

  • Cant see it happening myself. He’s a Premiership player now with 2 years experience, worth more than 1 million. And I cant see Mick selling a good squad player. Just my opinion guys. Cheers.

  • Not a chance in hell gentlemen!
I appreciate you got this rumour from the TWTD Ipswich Town website but they have just seem the arrival at Molineux of Roger Johnson and combined this with the fact that Christophe Berra has partnered him during recent try-out games and come up with the observation that Stearman is now out in the cold and might be unsettled. I’m afraid this is nothing more than shoddy rumour monging! I fully expect Stearman to play his part in the first team alongside Johnson next season but even if he did not become first choice and then even if he did eventually start to think he might get more games elsewhere he has only just signed a new contract earlier this year and would not go for much under £5M.

Nothing better than ineffective Sci Fi guys – although I wish you every success for next season and would love to see Ipswich back in the Premier League [as long as it is not with us going the other way!!]

  • Re: astraltrader – thank you for your, shall I say, frank assessment of this speculation! I should first point out that this rumour has in fact been circulating amongst the Ipswich press (http://www.greenun24.co.uk/ipswich-town/jewell_eyes_premiership_defender_1_977296) and not merely on TWTD, hence I felt it legitimate to at least report the link, regardless of whether it is likely or not. From what I understand, aside from Johnson’s arrival and Berra’s use in pre-season, the return of Craddock to fitness is considered a potential issue given how Stearman was effectively used in his absence for much of last season. In any case, the rumour is actually not of much interest to me personally – I used to watch Stearman at Leicester City and felt he was actually rather overrated.

  • Stearman is far from overrated. He’s a fantastic player with bags of confidence. Just still very young to be ahead of Craddock in our relegation scrapping team. That’s not to say he’s not good enough. Can’t see Mick letting him go just because he has 90 year old (awesome) Craddock currently higher up in the pecking order.
