Luke Chambers, David McGoldrick and Daryl Murphy from the penalty spot gave Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich a convincing 3-0 win at neighbours Colchester United.

McGoldrick had a viscous effort tipped onto the crossbar in the first minute by on-loan Chelsea keeper sam Walker and that set the tone.

Although Colchester showed terrific attacking intent Town were well organised and dealt with te danger.

Scott Loach made a couple of decent saves but t was the giant Walker who was the busier of the keepers.

Chambers exposed the fragile U’s defence midway through te first half within he escaped his marker and headed in an Anthony Wordsworth corner.

McGoldrick grabbed yet another pre-season goal when he pounced on a loose ball and drilled in from 16 yards.

Second half changes followed and Murphy sent Walker the wrong way from the penalty spot after winning a soft spot kick by going over the keeper’s despairing dive.

Good work out for Town who will give us all a lot of optimism going into the season opener at reading.
