West Brom star striker Kevin Phillips is said to be a target for Ipswich manager Jim Magilton as he continues his search for a goalscorer at Portman Road.

Phillips nearly signed for Ipswich in the summer of 1997 before disputes over the transfer fee meant the Blues miss out. He then went onto sign for Sunderland, and we all know how he got on there, becoming the Premiership’s leading scorer in the 1999/2000 season with 30 goals of his total 115 for the Black Cats.

After last season’s heroics for the Baggies, he is out-of-contract but wants a two-year deal at the Hawthorns. However, ex-Ipswich defender and West Brom manager Tony Mowbraw is only willing to offer the 34 year-old a one-year deal.

Should Ipswich offer what Phillips wants for his services, they face competition from Derby County and QPR. Nearly three weeks ago, Phillips’ agent denied that his client would end up at Leeds: ‘League One is not preferable and, to be perfectly honest. It’s unlikely that it would happen.’

The Blue have been targeting a goal-poacher, and the ex-Southampton and Aston Villa striker certainly fits that description.

  • Have to sign him. He is a quality goalscorer, and despite his age, a goalscorer is exactly what we need at Ipswich, just to get us out of this division. Our defence is looking better and better, so with a new goalie and a few extra additions that should be sorted for the coming season. But, we must sign Phillips, as he will give us that bit of magic up the other end of the field.

  • Should have signed him 12yrs ago when he was at Tranmere……But saying that ,give him a deal for a year. But he will probably want 2yrs minimum as he is no spring chicken.

  • He may be getting on but he can still score 20+ goals in the Championship. That would get you close to promotion.

  • if he is not going to sign for west brom 4 1 yr he wont sign for us but definately give him 2 yrs a quality goalscorer, definately would be the difference

  • Kevin Phillips never played for Tranmere, he was at Watford when you tried to sign him all those years ago. He would be a great player for you and just what you need at Portman Road. I think you will have a good season.

  • Cheers ‘sharpblades’, looks like we have a decent season ahead of us. KP would be a quality signing as I say.
