Defender Gareth McAuley has signed for West Bromwich Albion on a free transfer following his release by Ipswich Town.

McAuley, who made 127 appearances in three years at Ipswich, was made available on a free ‘Bosman’ transfer after rejecting the offer of a new contract with the Blues at the end of the season. The Northern Ireland international had been heavily linked with SPL champions Rangers, but the Premier League Baggies recently emerged as favourites for McAuley’s signature and have now secured a three year deal for the 31-year-old which commences on 1 July.

‘I would like to welcome Gareth to the club and I am very pleased we have added a player of his quality and experience to our team,’ Albion boss Roy Hodgson told the West Brom Official Website. ‘We believe it is the right moment for Gareth to embark on a Barclays Premier League career after doing so well for so long in the Championship and for his national team.’

One player who certainly won’t be leaving Ipswich however is Colin Healy. Unlike McAuley, the Irish midfielder has put pen to paper on a new one year contract having agreed terms earlier in the month to keep him at Portman Road for next season.
