Are Town Relegation Bound?

After two wonderfully successful seasons under manager Kieran McKenna are Town relegation-bound? Our recent form has made us all question whether coming up so quickly has worked against us. Our performances against West Ham United and Everton at the weekend have been cause for concern and simply not good enough.

There are, of course, mitigating circumstances for our fall from grace. Injuries to key defenders have not helped, nor has our inexperience at this level. As one Everton supporter suggested in the Talking Town comments section, “It was a case of men against boys and as a group, you need to grow up quickly!” I am inclined to agree.

What made us so successful under McKenna was our attacking prowess, but this has largely deserted us in the top flight of English football, and with the notable exception of Liam Delap, we have suddenly become a toothless attacking force. It could be argued that we have spent big on very average players and 12 Million for Irish international Dara O’Shea had failed to pay dividends. The same could be said for another 8 million on another Irish international in Nigerian Chiedozie Ogbene.

There have been some good acquisitions too, and although his hefty price tag might be playing on his mind, I think that Jack Clarke will eventually come good. I would apply the same logic to seasoned Championship campaigner Sammy Szmodics. Omari Hutchinson is already getting to grips with the trials and tribulations of Premier League football. We are swimming around with the big fish now, and if we are to survive I would like to see Town shop outside of the UK in January in European markets and elsewhere, which are more affordable. Brighton has done this to good effect for many years so why not us?  Swedish international Jens Cajuste has promise if he can stay fit.
