Another Good Workout For McCarthy

Manager Mick McCarthy has said that Ipswich got another very good workout today in our pre season game against Gillingham.

Goals in each half from Alex Henshall and Luke Hyam secured us the two nil victory at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium earlier today and speaking to the Official Site the gaffer was obviously pleased with what he saw.

‘It was a good workout for the lads, especially in the intense heat that both teams had to play in. I thought we played well and I thought we deserved to win.’

McCarthy goes on to say that he doesn’t really remember Dean Gerken being tested, and seeing now that our fitness is really starting to shine through, he was overall delighted with some of the passages of play that we put together on the afternoon.

‘We’re playing well and we’ve come through another game without picking up any injuries, so I’m very pleased.’

On the injury front the gaffer also revealed that David McGoldrick could also make his return to friendly action later this week as he made his return to training in the last few days.

Our top goalscorer last season, despite suffering knee ligament damage, has now returned to training and the gaffer believes he’ll be ready for some kind of run out in our games against Southend or Leyton Orient – or maybe even a few minutes in both – to help bring on his recovery and fitness work that step more.

‘Didz trained this week and did some work with TC on Wednesday and Thursday, before joining in with one of my sessions on Friday. He looked good and his fitness is absolutely fine. He’s a bit ring rusty because he’s returning from such a long injury lay off but he’s doing well. We might see him play against Southend or Leyton Orient but we’ll be guided by him and the physios and if they all think he can feature, then I’d like to give him some time on the pitch.’
