All Change At Portman Road

Since my last article a couple of days ago, it’s been all change at Portman Road. The comings and goings over the last few days have been unprecedented and as things stand, there is cause for optimism about what lies ahead for Ipswich Town football club.

It all began on Tuesday with the recruitment of Leon Best on a one year contract, with an option for a further year. At 29 he is much travelled but injuries have plagued most of his career and when he is fit he is a real handful so this was a satisfactory beginning, after his initial trial period.

Next up was Tom Lawrence on a season long loan from Leicester City and anyone who has taken a look at what the 22 year old has done so far in his short career will be suitably impressed I think.

In the meantime, we were informed that Piotr Malarczyk was set to join Polish top flight side Cracovia and that Cameron Stewart had his contract terminated by mutual consent and all this after Daryl Murphy had left us for Newcastle!

Then today, as the transfer window prepares to shut, we were once again very active with the recruitment on loan for the fourth time of asking of the one and only Jonny Williams!

Injuries too have blighted his previous visits to our club but it is another season long loan and although he is not quite fit to start yet, there is every hope that he will be back in the frame by the beginning of October, after an ankle injury curtailed his involvement with Crystal Palace in their last pre-season friendly.

We hear too that the transfer frenzy is still far from over because manager Mick McCarthy is anxious to get another striker through the door after the departure of Murphy and the fact that Barnsley turned down a million pounds for centre forward or attacking midfielder Marley Watkins today.

Another defender and perhaps another midfielder – although it is a striker that remains his top priority we are told.

So as the clock ticks down on deadline day, let us hope we can find someone who can get us goals because so far this season we have found finding the net our greatest challenge.
